    • Great Car- Be mindful of climate/temp

By MO Driver on Sunday, May 26, 2019

I want to set the record straight. Almost every review on KBB states this car gets worse MPG than advertised. When I was purchasing this car, the dealer informed me that they don’t sell a lot of hybrids in the Midwest, as the climate doesn’t do the cars a lot of favors. I’ve always wanted a hybrid/EV and the price was right on the Accord Hybrid EX. I purchased in Oct. when the weather was getting cold, and the car only got ~37 mpg. After some testing, I found that the heating requires massive amounts of battery, and the cold weather also makes the battery hold and discharge the batter less efficiently. As soon as spring hit, I’ve been getting as high as 50.5 mpg as a tank average! I got around 500 miles before filling up, and the gas light hasn’t even turned on. This is a fantastic vehicle, but you have to be mindful of where you live, and what the weather is like. This car would be perfect for Hawaii or a coastal city that sees stable, >60 weather year round. Hope this helps clear up the issue of people reporting lower than expected mileage.
    • How to evaluate mileage on the Accord Hybrid

First, this car is a really well built, well handling sedan with great gas mileage. This is my third Accord hybrid and fifth hybrid overall, so I'm somewhat of an expert comparing the Accord hybrid to the Prius and other models like the old Civic Hybrid (now Insight) and previous models of Accords. I have an EX-L that is really well appointed and a much better value in the low 30's than luxury brands that cost $35000-60000. The Touring really doesn't offer anything compelling over the EX-L and costs $3500 more, so consider the EX or EX-L as the best values among trim levels for the Accord Hybrid. I currently have both a 2018 EX for wife and 2020 EX-L Accord Hybrid for me. Second, a lot of reviewers here and on other sites slam the gas mileage as way under the EPA rating of 48 mpg. For the most part, they are correct that daily driving often doesn't meet this level. I had a 2017 Accord Hybrid that did exceed that level getting 53 in the summer months and about 45 in winter months. The 2017 is somewhat smaller in width and length dimensions, but otherwise is a great used alternative if you don't want to buy a brand new one. The 2017 uses the same type of engine as the 2018 and up Hybrid due to a redesign in 2017. You will definitely see a drop in mpg in the colder months in the northern US. Any temps below 45 F will drop gas mileage at least 5 mpg. This is just a fact due to the winter gas mixture and poorer combustion at lower temperatures. Another factor is that different drivers affect the mileage with how they accelerate and brake. The hybrid gives lots of feedback to the driver about optimal gas and braking effects on the mileage, so you can learn to be more efficient by coasting or not hitting the gas so hard when accelerating from a dead stop. The engine HP is very good in this car with both gas and electric motors propelling it, so you shouldn't be at a loss of power when getting up to speed like you do in a Toyota Prius. The Prius drives very much like a golf cart with very poor acceleration. An additional factor is if you use Econ or Sport modes in regular use. I always keep it in Econ mode, but that's a preference you can decide for yourself. The Sport mode is great for hilly terrain or quick acceleration on a freeway ramp, but should only be used all the time if you're a performance enthusiast. If you are power lover under the hood, you'd probably enjoy the Accord 2.0 Turbo engine on the Sport and Touring models more than the hybrid. My 2020 gets around 45 mpg and the 2018 gets around 42-45. I am disappointed in these numbers compared to the EPA standard, but either car can achieve 50 mpg or higher if the conditions are right: - mixture of city and highway driving - mild temperatures between 50-70 F - use of econ mode - avoid higher speeds of 75-85 on the highway that runs gas engine constantly The Accord Hybrid achieves the best mileage as an average of city and highway driving. If you normally drive 1-10 miles at a time in a city environment with stop signs and traffic lights, you will get less than 40 mpg for sure. If you tend to drive 5-30 miles on stretches of open road or highway with few stops and average around 45-55 mph, you'll get mileage in the mid- to high 40's every time. It's all about averages in the Accord Hybrid as to how it calculates the mileage on a drive or overall trip odometer. This may seem like an obvious statement, but if you don't reset the trip odometer with each fill up, your average will continue to accrue over multiple gas fill-ups and may be off from your most recent driving averages. The EPA estimates are least accurate for the Accord because there are more variables with the combined performance of two electric motors and a gas engine, plus different driving habits and conditions. The 1.5 liter Accord will get good mpg between 30-35 and up to 40 in mixed driving and the 2.0 about 28-33 mpg. The Hybrid could get anywhere from 40-52 mpg depending on the factors described above. Accord Hybrids are built in Marysville, Ohio, so you are supporting American workers as a bonus. My cars have been very solid with no mechanical failures, squeaks, leaks, or recalls over the last three years of owning Accord Hybrids.
    • Gas Mileage

I have the EX-L hybrid model and overall I am happy with this car. It is very comfortable and the features on the car work well. I have only had the car a short time. However, I was experiencing the same low mileage problems that others have stated. I was getting high 30s and low 40s per trip. Then I decided to turn off the ECON mode. My gas mileage is now averaging 46 mpg. I even went on a short 20 min trip and got over 50 mpg. I don't think ECON means what Honda thinks it should mean. The only other issue I have had is that a rattle over the drivers door has developed. I can only hear it when I am driving with the audio off. It is a bit annoying that a new car already has a rattle similar to what would be expected in an older car. Hopefully the dealer will be willing to take a look and hopefully repair this annoyance.
